The first poster for the sequel to 2017's surprise hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was revealed at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.
Sony chief Tom Rothman took the stage at CinemaCon last month to announce that a sequel to the surprise holiday season hit is in development, with the film set to hit theaters in Christmas 2019. The film’s release date would pit it against Star Wars: Episode IX, which is hitting theaters around the same time.
The studio has set Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, two of the writers behind the first movie, to pen a sequel that would reunite Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan. Matt Tolmach is returning as a producer alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has so far grossed $959,8 million at the worldwide box office, with $404,4 million of that coming from North America, making it Sony’s biggest hit to date. Thanks to it and a few other things, Sony is posting a decent profit for the October-to-December quarter and record profits for the year.
Welcome to the Jungle continues the legend of Jumanji introduced in the 1995 family film starring Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst. In the sequel, four high schoolers discover Jumanji, now in the form of an old video game, and are sucked into the jungles of the game, taking on the form of very different avatars who must beat the story in order to return to the real world.
Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is now available on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray and DVD. The film’s cast also includes Nick Jonas, Alex Wolff, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, Maribeth Monroe, Missi Pyle, Purab Kohli, Rhys Darby, Tim Matheson, Marc Evan Jackson, and Bobby Cannavale.
