A member of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps has been confirmed to appear in next year's Justice League, though who or how is yet to be revealed.
Heroic Hollywood founder & The Wrap reporter Umberto Gonzalez dropped the tidbit in his news breakdown of next year’s highly-anticipated superhero team-up, adding that said anonymous Green Lantern will pop up “in a key sequence.”
When director Zack Snyder initially teased Justice League, it was with the tagline “Unite the Seven.” However, as evidenced by the team shot above, only six members are accounted for. It was announced years ago a reboot titled Green Lantern Corps was planned for summer 2020, but that was just a release date, with only rumors filling the void of where the character could go prior.
Given the Corps is filled with aliens, it’s possible the character is a CGI creation, as no performer has been connected yet. Another, unlikelier possibility is they have already sneak-cast the Green Lantern superhero (either Hal Jordan or John Stewart . . . or both!) and are hiding him until the film’s release a year from now (although we saw how well that worked out with Johnny Depp in this weekend’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).
As for what role the character and the Corps will play, it’s possibly they’re involved in the prologue explaining Darkseid, the Mother Boxes, and the ancient alliance of humans, Atlanteans and Amazonians. There was also a rumor way, way back that the film would end with Green Lantern showing up to tee up the 2019 sequel vs. Darkseid.
What do you think? Excited to be seeing the Green Lanterns making a comeback sooner than expected? Where do you expect them to pop up in the film? Let us know in the comments!
Justice League hits theaters November 17, 2017 and its sequel for June 14, 2019. Green Lantern Corps is scheduled for July 24, 2020.
