‘Justice League: Mortal’ Concept Art Reveals D. J. Cotrona’s Black Superman Suit

Concept art from George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal has revealed the black Superman suit DJ Cotrona was set to don in the movie before it was ultimately scrapped by Warner Brothers.

Henry Cavill’s future as Superman in the DC Extended Universe has been in doubt for months now, but long before the actor made his debut as the character in 2013’s Man of Steel, DJ Cotrona was signed on to play him in a Justice League movie by Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller. However, Miller’s Justice League project was canceled by Warner Bros. right before it was about to begin filming and DJ Cotrona never got a chance to portray Superman.

Images of DJ Cotrona’s costume for Justice League: Mortal recently started making the rounds online and now fans can see the actor’s unused black Superman suit for the movie thanks to artwork shared by concept artist Matt Hatton. You can check out DJ Cotrona’s black Superman suit for Justice League: Mortal below.

In addition to DJ Cotrona as Superman, Justice League: Mortal would have also featured Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman,  Common as Green Lantern, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, Adam Brody as The Flash, Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter, Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord and Teresa Palmer as Talia Al Ghul. Late Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was also on board as Wally West.

While he didn’t get to play Superman, DJ Cotrona reportedly has a key role in the Shazam! movie that hits theaters next month. What do you think of DJ Cotrona’s black Superman suit for Justice League: Mortal? Are you sad we never got to see his take on the iconic character? Sound-off your thoughts in the comments!

The DC Extended Universe continues with Shazam! on April 5, 2019, followed by Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. A standalone Joker film set outside of the DC Films universe starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime is also set to hit theaters October 4, 2019. Here’s the synopsis for the Shazam! movie:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, the film stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.

Shazam! opens in theaters on April 5, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for more updates on the project and the future of the DC Extended Universe.
