Justice Smith Has His Fingers Crossed For A ‘Pokemon: Detective Pikachu’ Sequel

Justice Smith revealed that he is currently unaware of what the plans are for a potential sequel to Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.

Last summer, Detective Pikachu offered audiences the first live-action feature film adaptation of the popular Pokemon video games, with Justice Smith portraying the lead human character. After receiving generally positive reviews and proving to be a box office success, a sequel to Justice Smith’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu seemed to be an inevitability.

However, there has been little to no official word on the status of a Pokemon: Detective Pikachu and it appears Justice Smith is in the dark as well. During an interview with ComingSoon.net to promote All the Bright Places with co-star Elle Fanning, Justice Smith revealed that no one has told him anything about a Pokemon: Detective Pikachu sequel, but he remains hopeful:

“I wish somebody would tell me something. I have no idea, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

When Elle Fanning joked about him being secretive, Justice Smith replied, “No, I promise! I wish, I wish I knew.”

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Directed by Rob Letterman from a script he co-wrote with Dan Hernandez & Benji Samit, Derek Connolly, and Nicole Perlman, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular pocket monster, Justice Smith as Tim, Kathryn Newton as Lucy, and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe as Lt. Yoshida.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu will be released in theaters on May 10, 2019.
