Katherine Langford’s Cut Role In ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Revealed

Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed Katherine Langford’s deleted role during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Last fall, it was reported Katherine Langford joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame, leading to months-long fan speculation on who the 13 Reasons Why star could be playing. However, when Avengers: Endgame was released over one week ago, fans were surprised to see that Katherine Langford’s role had been cut from Marvel Studios epic, leaving the question of her character’s identity unanswered. Now, Joe Russo has revealed that Katherine Langford was cast as a teenage version of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts’ daughter, Morgan, for a scene following Tony’s sacrifice:

“There was an idea that we had that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers. And that there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station.”

Joe Russo explained the deleted Katherine Langford scene was intended to let Tony Stark know that his daughter would be ok, giving him peace before his death:

“The intention was that his future daughter, because these films are dealing with magic, his future daughter forgave him and sort of gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant. But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie.”

However, Anthony Russo explained the scene was cut partly because test audiences did not realize Katherine Langford was playing an older Morgan, meaning the emotional impact of the moment  didn’t resonate:

“What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter. So it wasn’t ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level.”

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers:Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo,  Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.
