Katherine McNamara Opens Up About Her Mysterious ‘Arrow’ Character

Katherine McNamara is joining The CW’s Arrowverse as Maya in Arrow, a mysterious character who fans finally know a little more about thanks to a recent interview with the actress.

A strong advantage that TV series have over movies is that they have the ability to draw out a mystery over hours-worth of story and content. One of the new mysterious characters coming to the long-running DC series Arrow is Maya. The character will be played by Shadowhunters actress Katherine McNamara who recently sat down with E! News to reveal some details about the character and joining the iconic Arrowverse.

Sadly, the actress wasn’t able to reveal to E! News exactly when she would be joining the DC series, but she did confirm that she will not be featured in the upcoming Arrowverse event that kicks off on December 9th. In the interview, McNamara gave some background on Maya, without giving too much away. She particularly compared it to her Shadowhunters role Clary and how the two personalities greatly differ.

“She’s a street fighter, so she’s a boxer in an underground fight club. She grew up in a very rough environment and is very much a product of that environment. So whereas Clary was very much the hopeful optimist, Maya is very much the realist and the one to punch first and ask questions later. She’s not one to be underestimated or messed with.”

Although she wasn’t able to reveal much more regarding the character of Maya, McNamara did reveal that she has plenty of secrets up her sleeve that she can’t give away just yet. She did, however, discuss what it is about the character that makes it particularly appealing to her as an actor.

“I do have a lot of secrets up my sleeve that have been so graciously shared with me by the showrunner [Beth Schwartz] and by everyone else on Team Arrow. The biggest thing I can say is there’s a lot to come from this character, and there’s so much as an actor for me to mine out of it. And just everyone at Arrow‘s been so welcoming, and it really has been a situation where I feel like I’m part of the family.”
