The Star Wars franchise is full of male directors, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is dead set on changing that in the future.
Of course, Kennedy will not replace any of the announced directors, but she firmly believes a female director is in the distant future. The Force Awakens starred Daisy Ridley as the movie’s protagonist, Rey, and the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will star Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso. In recent years, the franchise has become extremely diverse, especially in today’s day and age. In a new interview with Variety, Kennedy revealed how Disney and LucasFilm will attempt to change all this:
“We want to make sure that when we bring a female director to do Star Wars, they’re set up for success. They’re gigantic films, and you can’t come into them with essentially no experience. We want to really start to focus in on people we would love to work with and see what kinds of things they’re doing to progress up that ladder now, and then pull them in when the time is right.”
If I was to put money on it, I would not be surprised if an upcoming Anthology film scored a female director in the coming months, especially after Rogue One hits screens. But what do you guys think? Who would you like to see direct an upcoming Star Wars movie?
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to hit theatres everywhere on December 16.
