‘Harry Potter’ Actress Katie Leung Responds To J.K. Rowling’s Transphobic Tweets

Cho Chang actress Katie Leung has responded to Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s controversial tweets that many have viewed as transphobic.

On Saturday, Harry Potter author JK Rowling tweeted out a controversial response to a story regarding menstruation, calling out its use of the phrase “people who menstruate.” Backlash online followed with many believing Rowling’s tweet to be transphobic. This is also not the first time the author has sparked up controversy with the subject matter. Many online have since labeled Rowling as a “TERF” (Trans-exclusionary radical feminist) based on her tweets.

JK Rowling would later send out several more tweets in defense of her response and viewpoints of the article and the topic of gender in general. The Harry Potter author went onto explain that she felt “sex is real” and that “woman-hate is eternal.” Given how much the Harry Potter series preaches for inclusivity with “muggle-borns,” “half-bloods,” and “pure-bloods,” many fans of the series have been hurt and confused by Rowling’s comments regarding the real-world topic as of late.

With all the backlash online, many fans have also been curious to see how those who have been involved with the Harry Potter franchise felt about JK Rowling’s most recent comments. Katie Leung, who played Cho Chang in the Harry Potter films, shared her thoughts on Rowling’s tweets by linking to a fundraiser for homeless black trans women and a few more sites where people can donate or help the black trans community.
