Kelly Marie Tran On Fan Reactions To Rose’s Screentime In ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’

Kelly Marie Tran commented on the reactions to Rose Tico’s lack of screentime in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi introduced audiences to Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico, a Resistance mechanic who joined Finn on the journey to Canto Bight and became one of the most popular newcomers in the eyes of many fans. Unfortunately for those fans, Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico had significantly less screentime in J. J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final chapter of the main saga.

During a red carpet interview with MTV News at the 2019 Academy Awards, Kelly Marie Tran was asked how she felt about the fan reactions to Rose Tico’s diminished screentime in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Noting that she’s learned there will always be fans who are disappointed, Kelly Marie Tran stated that she is grateful to have been a part of the Star Wars saga:

“Last Jedi was my first movie, you know? So, I think I’m finally starting to realize that when your’re in something of that caliber, there’s so many people working to make something out of love. And no matter what you do there’s always going to be be poeple that aren’t hapy with that. But, I think the best lesson I’ve learned, is just to have fun and be present in the moment. So, um, I’m really grateful that I got to be a part of it.”

When asked if she was pleased with how Rose Tico’s arc played out in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Kelly Marie Tran simply commended director J. J. Abrams for wrapping up the stories of so many characters in a single film:

“I mean, I think that I’m really just amazed at the way that J. J. was able to sort of wrap up all these incredible stories. There were so many characters. You know, and at the end of the day I got to be part of something bigger than me, and that’s really special.”
