Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Discusses ‘Captain Marvel’ & ‘Wonder Woman’

DC has largely been playing catch-up with Marvel in regards to shaping their own cinematic universe.  However, one advantage that DC has is a successful female-led superhero movie with Wonder Woman, a code that Marvel boss Kevin Feige wishes he could have cracked first by releasing Captain Marvel years earlier.

Going up against decades of failed female-led superhero films like Supergirl, Catwoman and Elektra seemed like an uphill battle for Wonder Woman. If anything, the critical and commercial success of the hit DC film starring Gal Gadot proved that the problem with those other films was not the female component, but that they were poorly made.

Wonder Woman‘s massive $821.8 million total box office gross made it an easy decision for Warner Bros. to move heaven and earth to get Patty Jenkins back to direct the 2019 sequel. While Marvel Studios has yet to release a film made by a female director, DC is setting an important precedent by making Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 deal the most lucrative for a female director in history.

Marvel looks to catch up with DC in this regard with Captain Marvel, a film that will feature Brie Larson in the starring role as Carol Danvers and will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. As Marvel has yet to fully capitalize on the stardom of Scarlett Johnasson with a solo Black Widow, this will be their first go at a female-led film and the first one to have a female director at the helm.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kevin Feige spoke up about Marvel not being first for once and his confidence in the upcoming Captain Marvel film:

“I think it’s always fun to be first with most things. Everything’s going to work out.”

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel will star Brie Larson as Carol Danvers and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The script will be written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, based on an earlier draft by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve.

Captain Marvel is set to be released in theaters on March 8, 2019.
