Kevin Feige Clarifies Comments About Horror Tone In ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel

Kevin Feige clarified previous comments about the horror tone in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

While Scott Derrickson had previously teased that the Doctor Strange sequel would be Marvel Studios’ first true horror movie, Kevin Feige has recently clarified those comments and revealed more about what to expect from the sorcerer supreme’s next adventure. During a guest appearance at the New York Film Academy, Kevin Feige explained that he wouldn’t call the Doctor Strange sequel a horror film, but an MCU film that has “scary” moments in it.

“Multiverse of Madness is the greatest title we’ve ever come up with, by the way, which is one thing that’s exciting about it. I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s a horror film, but … it’ll be a big MCU film with scary sequences in it.”

Kevin Feige then went on to reference Stephen Spielberg and the horrific scenes from the Indiana Jones franchise, saying that while they weren’t horror films they still managed to be horrific. Kevin Feige then praised Scott Derrickson’s talents for on-screen horror while explaining that it’s always fun to be scared in that way. “I mean, there are horrifying sequences in Raiders that I as a little kid would [cover my eyes] when their faces melted. Or Temple of Doom, of course, or Gremlins, or Poltergeist. These are the movies that invented the PG-13 rating, by the way. They were PG and then they were like, ‘We need another [rating].’ But that’s fun. It’s fun to be scared in that way, and not a horrific, torturous way, but a way that is legitimately scary — because Scott Derrickson is quite good at that — but scary in the service of an exhilarating emotion.”

Details on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are currently limited, though it is said to be Marvel Studios’ first true foray into the horror genre. Furthermore, the Disney Plus mini-series WandaVision will also serve as the lead-in to the Doctor Strange sequel.
