Kevin Feige Says ‘Deadpool’ Success Isn’t Based On Film’s R-Rating

Fox’s Deadpool is not only an entertaining film but also a game-changer. The film grossed more than $391 million and proved that comic book films can have an R-Rating and still be successful. As a result, many studios started seeing if they can push the boundaries for comic book films. The third Wolverine film is reported to be an R-Rated film and there were even rumors that Warner Bros’ Suicide Squad would be an R-Rated film as well. There is even a discussion of a supercut of Batman v Superman that would have had an R-Rating. Needless to say, many think that based on the success of Deadpool (8th highest superhero movie of all time) that R the market is ready for R-Rated superhero films.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was recently asked if Marvel Studios would adopt this approach and make R-Rated films. To date, Marvel Studios has only made PG-13 films. Feige stated they have no plans on changing their current model. Feige also mentions that Deadpool was successful, not because it was a mature film, but because the filmmakers and producers got that character right.

“The other secret, and why it’s still a secret, I don’t know, but they just took what Deadpool is in the comics.  He breaks the fourth wall. He talks into the camera. He doesn’t give a shit about any of the other heroes. He doesn’t take anything seriously. All of that is what made Deadpool so popular in the comics. Tim (Miller) and his writers and Ryan Reynolds were able to get that and even magnify that up on the big screen. We’ve always said if there’s any ‘secret’ it’s respect the source material, understand the source material and then, any adaptation you make from the source material should be done only to enhance whatever the original pure spirit of the source material was. ‘Deadpool’ hit on all cylinders with that.”
