Kevin Feige Recalls How He Convinced Sony To Lend Marvel Spider-Man

You might imagine that convincing Sony to let Spider-Man join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be difficult. But according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, it wasn’t too terribly hard to do. All it required was some honesty and sound logic.

Thanks to an interview The Hollywood Reporter conducted with Feige, we now know how the conversation between Feige and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s then co-chairman Amy Pascal went down back in 2014.

“It really came down to me telling Amy in her office that I think the best thing for this character is: Sony has the rights, that’s not changing. “Have Sony pay for the movie, distribute the movie, market the movie. Just let us make the movie and incorporate him into our universe.”

After that, Pascal said yes, she was on board. Even after she left Sony after the 2014 hack, her exit deal let her transition to producing, keeping her around so she could defend the deal. To further keep things in check, Homecoming‘s budget is similar to other MCU films like the first two Iron Man and Captain America movies at $175 million.

With the reaction Tom Holland’s Spider-Man got for his part in Captain America: Civil War, things are looking up for Sony, Marvel, and our friendly neighborhood wall crawler.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017. The film features a cast that includes Tom Holland as Peter Parker (Spider-Man), Robert Downey Junior as Tony Stark (Iron Man), Zendaya Coleman as Michelle, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Tony Revolori as “Flash” Thompson, Laura Harrier as Liz Allan, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Jon Favreau as Harold “Happy” Hogan, Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes (Vulture), Bokeem Woodbine as Herman Schultz (Shocker), and Michael Chernus as Phineas Mason (Tinkerer). Donald Glover and Tyne Daly are also part of the cast in unspecified roles. A sequel is planned for release on July 5, 2019.
