With Stan Lee’s passing yesterday, one thought that has been on people’s minds is what this would possibly mean for his cameos in future Marvel-based projects. Not exactly the prominent thought to have after someone passes, but I suppose it was inevitable. As far as 2019, you have a number of Marvel-related films coming out. You’ve got Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, Dark Phoenix, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and The New Mutants. What about after that, though? Well, Kevin Feige may have an idea.
The operative word being “may” because obviously you can’t account for projects that aren’t even in pre-production yet, but if you recall, at one point Marvel Studios indicated that it had filmed a batch of Stan Lee cameos. For which films? No idea yet. At the very least we know that his cameo for Avengers 4 is all said and done, so there’s that. But what about beyond? And not just Marvel Studios, mind you, but Fox and Sony’s own Marvel projects as well. So what did Kevin Feige have to say about future cameos?
Well, here are his brief words to The Hollywood Reporter:
“One of the many things I learned from Stan was that everyone likes a surprise.”
And there you have it. Surprise. Obviously, at some point in time we’ll reach a point where there won’t be any Stan Lee cameos at all because, again, you have to account for many projects and adaptations that haven’t even made it to the scripting phase yet, if at all. So there’s nothing to extrapolate from Kevin Feige’s words here regarding Lee’s future cameos other than there being possible surprises. It’s entirely possible that unused footage could be used as a cameo. We’re already seeing that happen with the late Carrie Fisher and Leia’s appearance in Star Wars: Episode IX.
As Marvel Studios stated that it had filmed a bunch of Stan Lee cameos already, perhaps some of those unused ones could be inserted into a future Marvel-related project. How and in what way? That remains to be seen.
In the meantime, what has been your favorite appearance by Stan Lee in a Marvel-related project thus far? And how do you believe he could potentially appear down the line? Let us know in the comments below.
