Marvel Studios was trying to avoid "the cliché of the wizened, old, wise Asian man."
While the news of Oscar winner Tilda Swinton joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Doctor Strange excited many when it was originally announced, there was also some backlash due to the whitewashing of the Ancient One character. As Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios continue with their ever-expanding franchise, the more inclusive it becomes with its first Asian-led superhero film, Shang-Chi, due out later this year.
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Kevin Feige reflected on casting Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One and admits they should’ve gone in a different direction and explained why they originally went with her in the Doctor Strange role:
“We thought we were being so smart, and so cutting-edge. We’re not going to do the cliché of the wizened, old, wise Asian man. But it was a wake-up call to say, ‘Well, wait a minute, is there any other way to figure it out? Is there any other way to both not fall into the cliché and cast an Asian actor?’ And the answer to that, of course, is yes.”

Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One was last seen in Avengers: Endgame:
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.
