Kevin Smith Recounts Meeting ‘Batman Forever’ Director Joel Schumacher

Geek icon Kevin Smith recounted his meeting with Batman Forever director Joel Schumacher on the day of his passing.

Film fans all over the world, including director Kevin Smith, were shocked Monday morning when Joel Schumacher’s representative announced that the prolific director had passed away at the age of 80. Schumacher’s career spanned over 3 decades and numerous genres, though he’s best remembered for taking over the Batman franchise from director Tim Burton. His first foray in the franchise, Batman Forever, saw Schumacher turning the franchise into more light-hearted family fare that emphasized the campiness of the DC character.

To commemorate Joel Schumacher’s cinematic output, particularly his films from the ’80s, Kevin Smith took to Twitter to recount the time he met the director on the set of Batman and Robin.

During the ’90s, Kevin Smith was the go-to comic book nerd who knew just about everything about the medium. Decades later, Smith’s cred in in the industry continues to hold power. His remembrance of Joel Schumacher is heartfelt and it’s great that he had at least something positive to say about the “ill-fated” Batman and Robin. Though Batman Forever‘s sequel Batman and Robin was ridiculed at the time for numerous questionable decisions, the film has been reassessed by modern DC fans who have found value in its unique flair. In a cinematic landscape that is dominated by “dark and gritty” superhero films, it’s always great to go back and visit Schumacher’s Batman Forever or Batman and Robin that pushed the character’s boundaries.
