On last night’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher doubled down on his previous comments about Stan Lee and fans of comic books, telling them that it’s time to grow up. In the middle of these comments during his “New Rule” segment, Bill Maher addressed some criticism that he received from Kevin Smith. Smith’s original remarks stated that Maher took a shot when shots weren’t necessary.
In response, Maher responded that his comments weren’t a shot at Stan Lee, but grown men who still dress like kids- in reference to how Kevin Smith himself dresses. Smith, a previous guest on Maher’s program, took to Twitter this morning. He acknowledged that yes, Bill Maher did take a shot at him, Stan Lee, and adults who like comic books. Though Smith is not upset at that. He acknowledged that both he and Maher and stoners and stated that Maher is a real pussycat when confronted.
Smith then linked to a video of a previous time he had been on Bill Maher’s program and how he wanted to “dick smack” Bill Maher when he had been one of the many late night hosts commenting on Smith’s weight. Here, have a look at Smith’s tweet in the image below:
So while it seems that many in fandom are once again taking umbrage with Bill Maher’s words, Kevin Smith is taking it in stride. Hey, give Maher this: he isn’t backing down on his words. It would be very easy for him to issue a blanket apology, and the same people ranting and raving about him would then call him a coward for not sticking to his guns. In this instance, Bill Maher, the same man who made a cameo in Iron Man 3, is sticking to what he said. For better or worse, it’s already stoked the flames on social media.
So what do you think about Maher’s comments? Plus, what do you think of Kevin Smith’s response? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Real Time with Bill Maher airs on Friday nights at 10 pm on HBO. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for more related news on this story as it develops.
