Captain Marvel opened in theaters this week and it features quite a bit of references, whether it be to nineties pop culture or the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of these references comes at a moment in the film that is very bittersweet, Stan Lee’s cameo. In 1995, Stan Lee made an appearance in Kevin Smith’s film Mallrats that was brief, though very integral to the story.
Captain Marvel takes place in 1995, the same year that Mallrats was released. During a scene in the Brie Larson-led MCU adventure, Carol Danvers stalks up the aisle of a train in her green Kree suit in search of a runaway Skrull. Before finding her target, Carol spots Stan Lee reading Kevin Smith’s Mallrats script. The writer/director took to Instagram to share his emotional reaction to the cameo.
