Kevin Smith ‘Wouldn’t Pass’ On Chance To Direct ‘The Flash’ Movie

Whether you love the films or hate them (because, on the internet, there is no in-between), it’s hard to deny that the DCEU as a whole has gotten off to a pretty rocky start. No single film has had a more troubled beginning, however, than the solo The Flash movie starring Ezra Miller. The project has already gone through two directors, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa, and now a few big name directors have passed on the chance to helm the film. However, there’s one director that says he wouldn’t pass on the opportunity, and he actually has a history with the character.

After word came out earlier today that both former Spider-Man directors — Sam Raimi, director of the original trilogy that starred Tobey Macquire, and Marc Webb, who helmed the two Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man films — had passed on the chance to direct the Scarlet Speedster’s big screen solo debut, writer, director, podcaster and comic book aficionado Kevin Smith threw his hat into the ring on Twitter, albeit in his typical humourous self-deprecating style. Here’s the tweet in question:

Smith has actually already directed The Flash before, just on the small screen, in two episodes of The CW series. He has directed two episodes of The CW’s Supergirl as well. He’s also an accomplished writer in the world of DC, haven written for Batman and Green Arrow comics.

I am a massive Kevin Smith fan, but truth be told, I don’t exactly think he’s the right man for this job. Even Smith himself has said in the past that he wouldn’t be the right guy (his suggestion back in November was Deadpool director Tim Miller), though he admitted that he would sign up in a heartbeat if no one else would. As big of a comic book fan that he is and as much as he loves these characters (traits that I would love for the eventual director to have), these giant mega-budget blockbusters aren’t really the types of films that he makes. However, if Robert Zemeckis and Matthew Vaughn, who are both still in the running to fill the open director’s chair, both pass as well, I say just give it to Smith.

Ezra Miller, Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup are still attached to The Flash, which does not yet have a concrete release date.
