Kevin Smith has publicly spoken about his love for comic books and comic book films throughout his career and has even paid homage to famous comic book storylines in his own films. Now, Kevin Smith appears to have some good words for Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix’s new take on the Joker character in the upcoming film titled Joker. The film’s teaser trailer debuted early this morning and Kevin Smith had this to share about it.
You can read his full reaction below:
Kevin Smith has been a known comic book fan for some time now and even featured one of Stan Lee’s earliest film cameos in Mallrats. Joker will be a new take on the famous Batman villain with a more character driven story described by director Todd Phillips as a “tragedy”. Joaquin Phoenix is known to have portrayed characters that do not seem to fit society’s social standards so perhaps he will bring in some of that to this film. Kevin Smith may have not had the opportunity to see his friend, Ben Affleck, cross paths with the Joker, but he will get to see a new take on the famous Batman villain. With fans and celebrities like Kevin Smith raving about the Joker, there is no doubt the film is looking well for DC.

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
