Black Panther has been been critically and commercially acclaimed with a few nominations in this award season. Something people love about the movie is the ending. After Killmonger’s death, T’Challa finally shares Wakanda to the world at the end of the movie. T’Challa starts the Wakandan outreach program and the story ends full circle, ending in Oakland where the beginning scene of the movie starts. This ending wasn’t originally in the movie, though. The editor of the movie, Michael Shawver, stated in an interview with CinemaBlend about how the ending had to go through re-shoots.
“With re-shoots Ryan wanted to do a new ending, and it’s a whole bigger thing with the scene where Killmonger dies… What we shot originally, and in the script, was Killmonger saying ‘It’s beautiful, but what are you going to do for everybody in the world who can’t see this?’… And it was great. It was powerful, it was awesome, but it was problematic for a few reasons. One, we realized that just as a character, for the journey of T’Challa, he can’t get the answer to the movie and what he needs to do from the villain – like straight-up exactly what he needs. And that’s kind of what was happening. Secondly, it was a great performance, and [Michael B. Jordan] brought it, and it was painful to watch because you kind of don’t want this guy to die, but it didn’t fit his character.”
It might have been interesting to see what it might have been like without the re-shoots but the movie is so perfectly cut together it’s safe to say we’re glad it had to be cut out for the more satisfying ending.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. The film is available now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
