‘King Arthur’ Debuts With $1M+ At Thursday Box Office

Deadline reports King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword earned $1.15M in Thursday night previews at the domestic box office.

Guy Ritchie’s flashy take on the classic tale which cost Warner Bros. $175 million to produce is expected to flop with a $25 million opening this weekend as it goes up against Marvel’s latest sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 which has already taken $500 million at the worldwide box office along with the Amy Schumer – Goldie Hawn led action comedy Snatched which earned only $650K last night.

Legend Of The Sword which has managed to rise up to a rotten 26% from yesterday’s 21% on Rotten Tomatoes tells the origin of a young King Arthur who comes up unaware of his past after his Uncle Vortigern (Jude Law) murdered his Father (Eric Bana) and overthrew the crown. Once Arthur pulls the Excalibur from the stone, he’s confronted by both his Uncle and his past.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam as King Arthur, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey as Guinevere, Djimon Hounsou as Sir Bedivere, Aidan Gillen as Goosefat Bill Wilson, Jude Law as Vortigern and Eric Bana as Uther Pendragon. Here’s the official synopsis:

The young Arthur runs the back passages of Londonium with his crew, not knowing his royal lineage until he grabs Excalibur. Instantly confronted by the sword’s influence, Arthur is forced to make up his mind. Joining the rebellion and an enigmatic young woman named Guinevere, he must learn to address her and eventually understand her magic weapon, deal with his demons and unite the people to defeat the dictator Vortigern, the man who murdered his parents and stole his crown to become king.
