King Kong is back with a vengeance in Kong: Skull Island and Legendary premiered a final trailer to hype the monster movie less than two weeks from release.
The Apocalypse Now-flavoried take on the Kong legend is set in 1971, at the height of the Vietnam War. The secret organization Monarch (which was also at the center of Godzilla) has found a mysterious island they believe is a sanctuary for ancient species of giant beasts. They recruit a team to find and explore it. Monster mayhem ensues.
The folding of Skull Island into the Godzilla continuity changed the course of the MonsterVerse. The sequel to the latter, subtitled King of the Monsters, was pushed back from June 2018 to March 2019, replaced director Gareth Edwards with Michael Dougherty, and recently cast Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler as a daughter and father, respectively. It also sets up 2020’s mash-up Godzilla vs. Kong. That film is likely where we will see Kong next (barring the inevitable cameo in a King of the Monsters post-credits scene, as vice versa is rumored to be true for Skull Island).
Kong: Skull Island hits theaters March 10 and stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Jing Tian, Toby Kebbell, Thomas Mann, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, and Terry Notary in mo-cap as Kong himself.
