‘Kong: Skull Island’ Is King On Home Video, Beating ‘Fate Of The Furious’

Kong: Skull Island turned out to be one of the year’s biggest surprises with its better-than-expected opening and strong holds in the face of serious competition, and now another surprise just became apparent – the Eighth Wonder of the World has managed to outdo home video sales of the eighth The Fast and the Furious movie last week.

Variety is reporting that, since Kong: Skull Island released on July 18, the movie has secured the #1 spot in terms of Blu-Ray and DVD sales on both the NPD VideoScan First Alert Chart and the Blu-Ray Disc Chart alike. In fact, the Wal-Mart exclusive Blu-Ray which released it alongside its chronological sequel Godzilla (2014) ranked #10 on the latter chart. Both movies are a part of the MonsterVerse, a setting uniting the various creatures from Godzilla and King Kong settings together in a shared universe.

As mentioned previously, The Fate of the Furious fell to the #2 spot after opening to #1 previously. In the meantime, other notables include The LEGO Batman Movie (which rose from the #6 spot to #3 on both charts), Smurfs: Lost Village (#4 on DVD, #5 on Blu-Ray), and Beauty and the Beast (#5 on DVD, #4 on Blu-Ray).

Kong: Skull Island is now available on home video formats, featuring a cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Toby Kebbell, John C. Reilly, and Terry Notary. Other MonsterVerse movies in development are Godzilla: King Of Monsters (set for release on March 22, 2019) and Godzilla VS. Kong (set for release on May 29, 2020). No direct sequel to Kong: Skull Island has been announced as of yet.
