‘Star Wars’: Kylo Ren Promo Image Likens Adam Driver’s Villain To Darth Vader

A new promotional image for this December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker likens Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren to original trilogy villain Darth Vader.

While Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren attempted to convince Daisy Ridley’s Rey that she needed to let her past die, he never seemed fully convinced that it was his own philosophy as the character accomplished his grandfather Darth Vader’s goal of becoming the ruler of the galaxy and entrenching himself in the Dark Side of the Force. As such, it’s not surprising to see that the Knights of Ren have reconstructed his broken helmet in order to rebuild his image as Supreme Leader Kylo Ren rather than as Ben Solo, the fallen heir to the Skywalker bloodline.

This newly-surfaced promotional shot for The Rise of Skywalker accentuates the connection, as an image of Darth Vader’s melted helmet from The Force Awakens has been superimposed on Kylo Ren’s cape. As fans may remember, Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren looked at the helmet in that movie while making a confession. Also emphasized are the repaired cracks on Kylo Ren’s helmet, as light still tries to seep in in spite of Ben Solo’s reluctantness to go back to the light. Check out the Star Wars image with Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren below:

The entire trilogy has grappled with the idea of whether or not Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren is capable of redemption, and while the promotional images have suggested that he’s a straight villain in the film, cast interviews have painted a more complex picture for the fan-favorite the Star Wars character. Whether or not Kylo Ren can overcome his dark legacy seems to be entirely up to him.

Directed by J. J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams. Carrie Fisher will also appear as General Leia Organa through the use of previously unreleased footage shot from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2019. Stay tuned for the latest news on Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren and the Star Wars universe.
