‘John Wick’: Lionsgate Planning Universe With New Spinoff

Coming off of two successful John Wick films, it should come as no surprise that Lionsgate is looking to develop a whole movie universe around the character. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has just won a bidding war for a female-centric action spec-script that they believe will be a jumping-off point for a series of Wick spinoffs.

The script, Ballerina, has been described by those in the know as being similar to the film La Femme Nikita, but with a more Tarantino-esque vibe. Details are scarce but the script is said to be about a young woman assassin who must take out the assassins who murdered her family.

Ballerina was written by Shay Hatten and will be produced by John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk and his Thunder Road production company. The Hollywood Reporter also notes that several other studios including Warner Bros. and Universal were also trying to land the project, but Lionsgate saw it as a potential springboard for more John Wick films.

A third John Wick entry is also in the works with an unknown release date at this time. What do you think, would a ‘John Wick Cinematic Universe’ be something you’d like to see? Sound off in the comments below!
