Kinberg discussed the plan for the current slate of X-Men film characters.
“We have a sense of where each of all of the existing characters go from Deadpool to New Mutants to the mainland X-Men movies to potentially even X-23.”
Kingberg then discussed the development of new X-Men related projects, where he listed superhero teams including The Exiles as potential avenues to explore for the franchises future.
“Then, there’s other characters, like X-Flight, like Exiles… There’s a lot of characters to mine going forward. We’re still sort of in this phase where now we’ve completed the Wolverine story with Logan and we begin hopefully with New Mutants and eventually Gambit and continue with Deadpool.”
Though Kinberg’s comments are far from confirmation that projects involving either teams are or will be in development, they do suggest that the characters involved have at least been discussed as potential projects for the X-Men franchise.
X-Flight is likely a reference to Alpha Flight, a team of Canadian superheroes often affiliated with Department H, a fictional department in the Canadian Government. The team has consisted of characters such as Guardian, whose costumed is adorned with a red Maple leaf, and Sasquatch, who appears exactly as his name suggests.
The Exiles are a team of superheroes from various dimensions and realities tasked with correcting problems occurring in alternate timelines and worlds within the Marvel Universe. The team has consisted of characters including Blink, who was recently cast for FOX’s untitled X-Men television series, with actress Jamie Chung landing the role.
On a personal note, as a Canadian, it would be great to see Alpha Fight and the country of Canada depicted in the X-Men film universe. However, considering how convoluted the X-Men film timeline has become, perhaps The Exiles could settle that issue once and for all?
