Here’s How ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Producers Kept Loki’s Death A Secret

When you consider Loki’s ability to evade and slip out of dangerous situations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s no wonder how he ultimately met his demise at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The god of mischief can only get away for so long, after all. Then again, Loki’s getting his own program on Disney’s streaming service down the line, so not like we can completely count him out yet. But like many things in Infinity War, this had to be kept under wraps. And since this film had a lot of deaths, you have to be creative with keeping secrets.

So how do you do this for Loki’s death when it comes to Infinity War? Well, you fudge the details a bit. Such is the case here. In the “Art Of” book for Infinity War, executive producer Trinh Tran let it be known that crew members were kept in the dark about Loki’s fate until the very day of shooting said scene. And how could you not? Given the amount of secrecy the Russo Brothers have had regarding both Infinity War and Avengers: Untitled, you want to avoid spoilers leaking out, especially when your films have the likes of Tom Holland, Mark Ruffalo, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

As Tran revealed in the Infinity War book:

“We created a version of the script where Loki would get away in an escape pod at the beginning of the movie. When we started shooting that particular sequence, we had crew members who were thoroughly confused. We had to let them know that those were fake versions of the script that they read.”

Well, it sounds like a more dignified exit for Loki than him being forced to play a game of “Get Help,” like in Thor: Ragnarok. It would also mean not being flung into a squadron of soldiers. But now it remains to be seen how he might be resurrected in Avengers: Untitled. Hey, maybe he’s revived through the use of an escape pod. Who knows?
