Lord & Miller Conflicted With Lucasfilm On Comedy For ‘Han Solo’

New details on the conflict between Phil Lord & Chris Miller and Lucasfilm reveal that exact nature behind the creative differences on the 'Han Solo' film.

On Tuesday, news broke that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had exited the Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story, citing creative differences as the reason behind their departure. Shortly after it was reported that the duo were fired following months of conflict with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Now, Entertainment Weekly has revealed new details on the reason behind the differences and why both parties could not come to understanding or compromise on their respective visions for the project.

According to EW’s sources, Lord and Miller had been making the film more of a comedy than a space fantasy ever since production began at the end of January, diverting from the script written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan:

“They thought they were brought on to make a Phil and Chris movie… Sometimes they just thought the actors could do it differently.”

The improvisation by the cast and the unscripted ideas by the filmmaking duo significantly changed the film’s story, with the directors and producers ultimately having different visions key scenes. With Lord and Miller reportedly refusing to compromise on their vision, making changes during reshoots was an unlikely solution to the conflict.

Kennedy wanted what was best for the project and hoped the filmmaking duo would make the film as she envisioned based on her long history of proven experience. Unfortunately, the duo did not deliver to the Lucasfilm president’s satisfaction as Lord and Miller were reportedly informed of their termination on Monday and production was put on hold.

Today, Ron Howard officially replaced the duo as director on the film. Howard will have two weeks to form a plan and finish the film on time or with little extension to the schedule as possible. The outlet’s sources said Lord and Miller hold no ill-will towards Howard as “somebody has to take over the movie.”

While Lord and Miller may have met with DC Films about The Flash, representatives for the filmmakers declined to comment on if the duo might return to the project.
