Amazon is currently developing a new Lord of the Rings prequel series with writing team JD Payne and Patrick McKay on board to spearhead the show. While Peter Jackson – the director of the Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy and subsequent Hobbit films – will not be involved with the series, the filmmaker explained that he is excited to watch the series purely from an audience standpoint:
“I’m kind of looking forward to it. I was a guy who didn’t get to see the Lord of the Rings like everybody else because I had to make it, so I’m looking forward to seeing somebody else’s take on the Tolkien world.”

Details on the story of the Lord of the Rings television series are currently under wraps, though the project will be set before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. Amazon Studios will produce the series in collaboration with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema.
Amazon has made a multi-season production commitment to the series and will stream the series on an undetermined date.
