Luke Skywalker Referred to as The Last Jedi in ‘The Force Awakens’

Since the Episode VIII title was revealed as The Last Jedi, many have begun to speculate if the title refers to Luke or Rey but we already have our answer.

Since Lucasfilm announced this morning that the next chapter in the Skywalker Saga has been officially titled Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, many have already begun to speculate as to whether or not the title refers to Luke Skywalker — signaling his demise in the upcoming film — or if the title refers to Rey. Supreme Leader Snoke’s first scene in The Force Awakens may give us our answer.

When Snoke is first revealed speaking with General Hux and Kylo Ren, he warns them of the possible future that lies ahead should BB-8 make his way back to the Resistance.

“The droid will soon be delivered to the Resistance, leading them to the last Jedi. If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi will rise.”

In this context, Luke is the last Jedi and Rey is the new Jedi. It seems the future Snoke foresaw will indeed become true as Rey was last seen making her plea-turned-demand for Luke to return to the galaxy with her in an effort to restore balance to the force.

To further support this, there is another instance in The Force Awakens when Luke is referred to as the last Jedi. The second sentence of the film’s opening crawl also states Luke is the last Jedi. Check it out below.

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

With the support of the REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE. She is desperate to find her brother Luke and gain his help in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy.

Leia has sent her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where an old ally has discovered a clue to Luke’s whereabouts….

Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran, and Andy Serkis. Written and directed by Rian Johnson.

Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15, 2017.
