Luke Skywalker’s Residence In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Explained

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we heard that Luke Skywalker was searching for the last Jedi Temple. In The Last Jedi, we'll find out why.

The latest Star Wars-centric issue of Vanity Fair has revealed that Luke Skywalker’s journey to find the first Jedi Temple has brought him to Ahch-To, and specifically to a small village where the ancient Jedi once lived in.

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke’s whereabouts and ultimate goals were shrouded in complete mystery aside from a vague comment about looking for the original Jedi Temple. Now with Star Wars: The Last Jedi on the horizon, we have a better idea of what to expect.

Luke’s been living on Ahch-To for several years (current context clues within the new canon novel Star Wars: Bloodline suggests that he was betrayed by Kylo Ren less than six years prior to The Force Awakens, meaning that Luke has likely spent about half a decade on the planet). But he hasn’t quite been alone all this time – Ahch-To is home to a race of indigenous residents that serve as caretakers. As for the caretakers, director Rian Johnson remained tight-lipped as to not officially give anything away – only confirming that the creatures are “not Ewoks.”

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will rise on December 15, 2017. The movie’s cast includes Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Benicio Del Toro as “DJ”, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, and Jimmy Vee as R2-D2.
