Shyamalan first entered the superhero genre by writing and directing Unbreakable after the success of The Sixth Sense. 19 years later and the sequel to Unbreakable in Glass hits theaters at a time when the superhero genre is thriving. Unbreakable is disguised as a superhero film and ahead was a head of its time in retrospect. While Shyamalan is making a comeback, it is hard to believe the Split director has never helmed a DC or Marvel film. Shyamalan revealed in an interview with Yahoo! why he has rejected offers to direct DC and Marvel films in the past:
“I want to make sure it’s right for everybody. I have a strong [filmmaking] accent. It’s very particular, and the best version of it is, to keep the accent. Are those movies [Marvel and DC superhero films] a place for that? Or is it appropriate for that? Because they, in and of themselves, have their own flavour. Do they want this other tabasco in there? So it’s philosophically a question. It doesn’t mean [i’ll] never [do it], but it’s very hard to imagine. Filmmakers that have a heavy accent – I don’t necessarily want them to make those movies.”
Filmmakers like Edgar Wright and Rick Famuyiwa have departed superhero films over creative differences with the studio. However, auteur filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, James Gunn, James Mangold, and Zack Snyder have had success in executing their own personal flair within the genre. It seems Warner Bros. and DC Films are willing to give directors free reign, with Todd Philips’ Joker under a new banner hitting theaters later this year. Shyamalan went on to explain he wants a studio to be okay with the creative decisions he makes:
“It’s not fair to [studios], because they want to make [their films] in a certain language. And what if I said ‘Hey, I’m going to do this 3-minute shot on the back of his head, and I also want to make them very dark, and I want his motivation to be really ambiguous, and I want to challenge the audience to make them super-uncomfortable.’I want [the studio] to be OK with those things.”

Here’s the synopsis for Glass:
From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.
Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
Written and directed by M Night Shyamalan, Glass stars James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Spencer Treat Clark, and Charlayne Woodard.
Glass will be released in theaters on January 18, 2019.
