Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’ Creator Explains Mahershala Ali’s Early Exit As Cottonmouth

Marvel's Luke Cage creator reveals why Mahershala Ali didn't last long on the series.

Marvel’s Luke Cage creator Cheo Hodari Coker revealed why Mahershala Ali’s Cottonmouth didn’t survive the first season.

Before being announced as Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at Hall H last summer, Mahershala Ali already had a fair share of roles in other Marvel projects. The Academy Award-winner voiced The Prowler in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and starred in Marvel’s Luke Cage series on Netflix as Cottonmouth.

In Luke Cage season one, Mahershala Ali’s Cottonmouth was a highlight of the series before dying at the hands of Alfre Woodard’s Mariah Stokes, who also had a role in Captain America: Civil War as Miriam Sharpe. Cottonmouth’s death was a surprise to many viewers since it occurred in the seventh episode. Some fans were also disappointed with Cottonmouth’s early exit since the next villain, Diamondback, wasn’t as beloved. On Twitter, Marvel’s Luke Cage creator Cheo Hodari Coker revealed the reason why Ali’s Cottonmouth died early on in season one:

Here is the synopsis for Marvel’s Luke Cage:

After clearing his name, Luke Cage has become a celebrity on the streets of Harlem with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin. But being so visible has only increased his need to protect the community and find the limits of who he can and can’t save. With the rise of a formidable new foe, Luke is forced to confront the fine line that separates a hero from a villain.

Luke Cage stars Mike Colter as the titular hero, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Theo Rossi as Hernan Alvarez/Shades, Gabrielle Dennis as Tilda Johnson, Mustafa Shakir as John McIver/Bushmaster and Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard/Black Mariah.
