Michael Shannon Reveals His Thoughts On ‘Man Of Steel’s Ending

After nearly seven years, General Zod actor Michael Shannon reveals what he thought of his character’s death at the end of Man of Steel.

Man of Steel was a Superman film that divided audiences and critics. Many complained about the film’s grim tone and the overall lack of joy and that it inspired. Perhaps the most divisive part of the film, however, was the death of Michael Shannon’s General Zod.

In Man of Steel, General Zod is presented as something of a tragic villain. His entire goal is to protect Krypton and its people no matter the cost, ultimately deciding to try and turn Earth into a new Krypton. Superman thwarts this goal, sending all of General Zod’s soldiers into the Phantom Zone, prompting him to savagely attack Superman and promises to destroy the world in retribution. The fight ultimately ends with Superman snapping Zod’s neck after which, itself was a controversial creative decision given Superman’s defacto no-kill rule. Despite the film having come out nearly seven years ago, however, Michael Shannon has remained quiet about this decision until now.

While speaking to CinemaBlend, Michael Shannon was asked what he thought of the death of General Zod in Man of Steel. He bluntly answered that he felt it was the only way it could end:

No, I didn’t think there was any other way to end, it, really. I mean, Zod says it’s either me or you. I’m not gonna let you survive. I will kill you, unless you kill me. And that seemed sufficiently Greek to me, you know?

What did you all think of the death of General Zod in Man of Steel? Was the violation of Superman’s no-kill rule to much for you? What did you think of the film as a whole? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Man of Steel is now available is available on Digital HD, 4K UHD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD.
