‘The Mandalorian’: Bryce Dallas Howard Talks Working With Jon Favreau

Bryce Dallas Howard describes working with The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau as a “dream come true”.

As one of the few directors selected to helm an episode for the first live-action Star Wars television series, Bryce Dallas Howard seized the opportunity to explore the galaxy far, far away as a filmmaker. While promoting her new documentary Dads at the Toronto International Film Festival, Bryce Dallas Howard had this to say about working with Jon Favreau:

“Getting to be a director, part of The Mandalorian, it’s been like…Jon [Favreau] didn’t even know that about me. It was a dream come true on so many levels. He’s a brilliant filmmaker, but a better mentor — he just wants to share in the excitement and passion of filmmaking and what’s possible. Nothing about it that’s proprietary. It’s let’s push this forward and see what else can happen. I was doing Dads at the same time I was shooting Mandalorian and the stuff I was learning from Jon Favreau was completely applicable to a documentary.”

Despite some experience directing smaller projects, The Mandalorian is the first time Bryce Dallas Howard has directed a television episode. She is joined by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow and Taika Waititi as the group of directors bringing the first eight episodes of the series to life.

Star Wars is certainly a legacy franchise for Bryce Dallas Howard and her family. Her father, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard took over the directing duties for Solo: A Star Wars Story after original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired.

The Mandalorian is set after Return of the Jedi and will explore the Star Wars timeline between the original and sequel trilogies for the first time in live-action. Pedro Pascal stars as the titular character, along with Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte. Here’s the official synopsis:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian will debut exclusively on Disney Plus, which is set to launch November 12 in the United States and some other regions. Disney Plus is $6.99 for a monthly subscription and $12.99 for a monthly subscription bundle that also includes ESPN Plus and Hulu.
