Mark Hamill Reveals Cut Batman 1989 Storyboard Sequence With Robin

Batman: The Animated Series star Mark Hamill revealed a storyboard sequence with Robin that was cut from the final version of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film.

Using Twitter, Mark Hamill unveiled the clip of an animated storyboard sequence. In the clip, Mark Hamill returned to voice Joker while Batman: The Animated Series and Arkham star Kevin Conroy returned to voice Batman. Hamill explained that he and Conroy recorded audio for a DVD extra plenty of years ago.

A brief intro to the clip explains what’s going on. This sequence was lined up to appear toward the end of the movie. As Batman chases Joker through Gotham, he’s joined by Robin for a final assault against the Crown Prince of Crime. From the looks of it, it’s Dick Grayson as Robin in this example. Here’s the clip Mark Hamill posted on Twitter:

Tim Burton’s Batman came out 30 years ago in 1989. The film stars Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader up against Jack Nicholson as The Joker. The Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman trilogy did not introduce Robin until the final film, Batman Forever. The series later inspired the creation of Batman: The Animated series where Mark Hamill famously starred as the voice of Joker with Kevin Conroy as Batman.

While Mark Hamill shared this cut sequence, it’s unclear why it got cut and Tim Burton hasn’t commented on it.

Do you think this clip would’ve added more to the movie? Would introducing Robin earlier help the trilogy? Why do you think it was removed? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments!

Plot details for The Batman are currently under wraps. Previous rumors once pointed to an earlier version of the script featuring Ben Affleck bookending the film as his current Batman while the film introduced a younger version of the character. But with Ben Affleck retired from the role, Robert Pattinson has officially replaced the Batman v Superman and Justice League star as the DC Extended Universe’s live-action Bruce Wayne.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is one of the many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Films. The list also includes The FlashGreen Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Shazam 2, Supergirl, Aquaman 2, The Trench, Blue Beetle, Plastic Man, and New Gods.

The Batman arrives in theaters on June 25, 2021. Stay tuned for more updates on the project and the future of the DC Extended Universe.
