Mark Hamill Discusses ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Special Effects

Mark Hamill isn’t allowed to say much about the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII but while at Salt Lake Comic Con, Hamill let a small detail slip about the upcoming special effects that will be featured in the next chapter of the trilogy. Hamill took the stage alone and encouraged interaction from fans, very similar to what he has done at previous Star Wars Celebration events.

Hamill had been sent a copy of the Batman animated feature The Killing Joke (in which Hamill plays the Joker), and he explained that he didn’t have time to view the final cut of the film right away because of night shoots that were taking place on Episode VIII .

“Doing night shoots; that’s where you sleep all day, you get up in the late afternoon, and go to work, and as soon as it gets dark you film until the sun comes up the next morning.”

“But I came home and I realized, ‘oh my gosh, they have an interview for me tomorrow afternoon. I haven’t watched [The Killing Joke], and the day after I start on a sequence, an elaborate special effects sequence where I’m not going to be able to do anything. I have to focus specifically on the Episode VIII scene I’m doing.”

Star Wars: Episode VIII stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Lupita Nyong’O, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran, and Andy Serkis. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson, and it will be playing in a galaxy far, far away (or in your local theater) on December 15, 2017.

What could this mean for Episode VIII? Will be seeing more of Luke Skywalker in action? Only time will tell but it seems like Rian Johnson is doing something very original for Episode VIII.
