‘Avengers: Endgame’: How Does Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk Return?

Bruce Banner’s (Mark Ruffalo) alter ego Hulk returns in Avengers: Endgame to face Thanos (Josh Brolin) once again.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME AHEAD!

Avengers: Endgame finally hits theaters this weekend and it features one of the most incredible superhero team-ups to hit the big screen. In last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, Mark Ruffalo played a key role but his screentime as Hulk was very limited. In the opening scene of the 2018 film, Hulk throws down with Thanos in an epic fight scene that ends with Thanos beating Hulk so badly that he refuses to return for the rest of the film.

Mark Ruffalo was still a big role in Avengers: Infinity War and in Avengers: Endgame, his role has only gotten bigger. The film opens with the team trying to figure out how to hit back against Thanos, now that Tony Stark (Rober Downey Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) have been rescued from deep space by Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Throughout the entire opening of the film prior to the five-year jump fans are only treated to Mark Ruffalo in his normal clothes and briefly in the Hulkbuster armor, but not as Hulk.

Hulk doesn’t appear until farther into the film’s first hour but when he does, it’s in a very unexpected way. When our titular heroes are planning their insane idea of traveling back in time they, of course, seek out the aid of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner,  who has now merged with the Hulk in a way he wasn’t before. As he puts it himself, Mark Ruffalo’s character has merged “The brain and the brawn” into one permanent body, thanks to an experiment.

Not only does Hulk look more like Mark Ruffalo than ever, but he speaks with a totally normal voice as well. Hulk has spoken in films like 2012’s The Avengers and 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok but now Hulk speaks with Mark Ruffalo’s normal voice. Hulk has also donned a more jovial personality, a very distinct difference from any Banner or Hulk performance fans have seen from Mark Ruffalo yet.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Avengers: Endgame as soon as more information becomes available. Were you a fan of Mark Ruffalo’s new Hulk persona in Avengers: Endgame? Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame is expected to star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Josh Brolin and Chris Pratt.

“A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”

Avengers: Endgame will hit theaters on April 26, 2019.
