‘Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Name-Drops Captain America Villain Red Skull

The latest episode of Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD name-dropped the Red Skull and another Captain America: The First Avenger character.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD recently introduced audiences to a new Marvel Cinematic Universe character known as Freddy Malick, the father of Powers Boothe’s former HYDRA head Gideon Malick. Played by Never Have I Ever breakout Darren Barnet, Freddy is a follower of HYDRA who was given a mysterious vial during during last week’s Agents of SHIELD season seven premiere.

In the second episode of Agents of SHIELD‘s seventh season, Jemma Simmons discovered that the vial contains one of the key ingredients of “a formula that first appeared in Germany during World War II.” Simmons then mentioned that the formula was created by Abraham Erskine, a German scientist who was featured in Captain America: The First Avenger. The formula came to be known as the Super Soldier serum, the same solution that gave Captain America his powers.

However, Abraham Erskine wasn’t the only Captain America: The First Avenger character who was name-dropped by Simmons, as she also mentioned that the formula was first used by Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. the Red Skull. Played by Hugo Weaving, the Red Skull was the main villain of The First Avenger. He later returned as the keeper of the Soul Stone in Avengers: Infinity War and its-follow up Endgame. The Walking Dead star Ross Marquand replaced Weaving as the Red Skull for the character’s last two MCU appearances.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD continues next week with the episode “Alien Commies From the Future!” on ABC. Here’s the official description for season seven:

Picking up where we left off with Season 6 — and the reveal of a new Phil Coulson Life Model Decoy — Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are thrust backward in time and stranded in 1931 New York City. With the all-new Zephyr set to time-jump at any moment, the team must hurry to find out exactly what happened. If they fail, it would mean disaster for the past, present, and future of the world.

Agents of SHIELD stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Jeff Ward. The series was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb. It is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television for ABC.
