Marvel Studios Rumored To Be Moving Forward With ‘Black Widow’ As First R-Rated Film

A new rumor suggests Marvel Studios will indeed make the Black Widow standalone film starring Scarlett Johansson its first R-rated feature film.

Earlier this month, That Hashtag Show’s Charles Murphy reported Marvel Studios considered the Black Widow standalone film to be the studio’s first R-rated film earlier in its development. With the film set to go into production soon, a new rumor suggests this is actually happening as the studio is indeed moving forward with this idea. According to a Blind Item revealed on Hollywood gossip blog Crazydaysandnights, the film will serve as an experiment for Marvel Studios as their first foray into R-rated comic book films.

Production on the project is expected to begin next month. Cate Shortland (Lore) is directing the standalone film centered on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular female character played by Johansson from a script written by Jac Schaeffer. Schaeffer is best known for writing Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, and the 2009 sci-fi romance TiMER which she also directed.

Plot details remain under wraps, however, the film is expected to feature events that occurred prior to the character’s debut in Iron Man 2. In the comics, Natasha Romanoff was trained by the Winter Soldier himself, Bucky Barnes played by Sebastian Stan in the films.
