Marvel’s ‘Hawkeye: Freefall’ Comic Features ‘Joker’ Easter Egg

A surprising Joker Easter egg appears in Marvel’s Hawkeye: Freefall with Clint Barton taking shots at the Joaquin Phoenix film.

It seems like Marvel isn’t afraid to take playful shots at DC as seen with a Joker Easter egg in Hawkeye: Freefall #3 written by Matt Rosenberg. While the folks at Warner Bros. and DC aren’t exactly going to be offended given that Joaquin Phoenix just won Best Actor at the Oscars for his performance in Joker, the brief callout to the film in Marvel’s Hawkeye: Freefall #3 will definitely make readers laugh a little thanks to Clint Barton’s reaction to it.

Marvel included the Joker easter egg when Hawkeye gets a call from Bryce ,who tells Clint about a film he was watching, noting that someone “killed these three guys on the subway. After that, it got all weird.” When Bryce offers to let Hawkeye watch the film because he torrented it, Clint lectures his friend about illegally watching movies, but he takes a quiet shot at Joker by saying “Also, it sounds real dumb. I gave you this channel for work calls, okay?”

Hawkwye is expected to return on the small screen with a Disney Plus series. Full details on Hawkeye are currently under wraps, though the Disney Plus series will follow Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton as he prepares to pass the mantle to Kate Bishop. In the comics, Kate Bishop is the third character and first woman to assume the Hawkeye name.

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is just one of the many projects Marvel Studios is developing for Disney Plus. These projects include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk.

Hawkeye is currently scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in Fall 2021.
