As we all know, earlier today it was announced that James Gunn would be returning to Marvel and Disney to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director was infamously fired from last year after a series of old Tweets that the director made resurfaced that prompted outrage. The outrage, as it turned out, was prompted by a group of alt-right Twitter groups who apparently took exception to comments that James Gunn made about President Donald Trump. Disney, however, stood by their decision to keep the director away from Marvel projects. That is until today it seems. But if certain reports are to be believed this may have been the case the entire time.
According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s version of events, Marvel and Disney went back to James Gunn and never actually sought out other directors for the film. It does not say, however, when this may have occurred and how long the companies intended to bring the director back to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. This is all according to insiders, the report says. If so, Disney and Marvel may have had to push the release date of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for seemingly no reason.
What do you all make of this news? When do you think James Gunn was really rehired as to direct the new Guardians of the Galaxy film? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
James Gunn had completed his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and production was scheduled to begin early this year. However, the project was put on hold following the decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy, though Disney and Marvel Studios reportedly intended to use his script. Now, production on the third Guardians film will begin after James Gunn directs The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
