Marvel Entertainment has released a new video in memory of the late Joan Lee featuring Marvel Comics co-creator Stan Lee sharing the story of how they met.
The wife of Marvel Comics co-creator Stan Lee passed away in Los Angeles, CA on Thursday after she was hospitalized due to suffering a stroke earlier this past week. She was 93 years old.
Lee and Joan married in 1947. Together they had had two children, J.C. who was named after Joan in 1950 and Jan three years later. Jan sadly passed away within three days of being born. Lee and Joan remained together for 69 years.
The new video released earlier today features Lee with Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada. Lee recalls the story of how he first met Joan before going on to tell how she played a key role in the creation of Marvel Comics.
In 1961, Lee almost quit the comic industry for good after being displeased with his publisher Martin Goodman and the way he was directing Lee to tell stories. Before he quit, Joan advised Lee and encouraged him to write one more comic. “Why don’t you do one book the way you want to do it?” Joan said. Lee went on to write Fantastic Four with the help of Jack Kirby. It all began one month later after the book resonated with readers and Lee was asked to write more titles similar to that of Fantastic Four.
