Marvel Studios’ post-Avengers: Endgame plans include projects for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service and one of them is rumored to be an animated anthology series based on the What If series by Marvel Comics. However, while Marvel Studios and company president Kevin Feige will oversee the What If series, the stories will not be canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Much like the What If comics, the animated Disney+ series is said to explore how the Marvel Cinematic Universe would look had key moments or events unfolded differently than recognized canon. One episode will reportedly adapt What If? Vol.1 #47, in which Loki was the one who found the hammer of Thor.
According to the outlet, the idea is that some main actors from the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe could reprise their roles for the Disney+ show, which would explore a different alternate possibility from another dimension in each episode. Details on whether the series will adapt more stories from the comics (aside from the tale mentioned earlier) or create entirely new scenarios are currently unknown, though they will be based on what fans have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as opposed to comic book canon.
