Earlier this year, it was revealed that a Shang-Chi movie was in the works. A recent Tweet from Variety Film Reporter Justin Kroll reveals some new details about the project. With San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, it appears that Marvel is putting out test offers to men in their 20’s. According to the Tweet, the men MUST be of Chinese ancestry. Here is the Tweet explaining the details:
No details have been revealed on a lead for the Shang-Chi film. Fans have speculated several names for the lead role. Actors like Donnie Yen, Henry Golding, and even Keanu Reeves have circulated around the rumor mill and fan-casting posts. So far, however, no one has been confirmed to play Shang-Chi. And while this Tweet details casting men, it’s unclear whether or not the “men” will be up for the role of Shang-Chi.
Shang-Chi first appeared in Marvel comics in the book Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1975. He is the son of Fu Machu, a Chinese mastermind who attempted world conquest. From infancy, he was trained strictly in martial arts and grew to become one of the world’s best martial artist. Shang-Chi has a mastery of chi, which allows him to detect enemies and surpass the physical limitations of most athletes. He can dodge bullets and has mastered a plethora of weaponry, from shuriken to nunchucks, staffs, and more.
