While David S. Goyer was previously in talks to direct the Masters of the Universe film before stepping away to focus on other projects, he remained on board as an executive producer and screenwriter for the project. Now, Sony has hired Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, whose previous credits include Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight, to write a new draft of the Masters of Universe script.
Based on the Mattel franchise of the same name, Masters of the Universe centers on the conflict between He-Man, the secret identity of Prince Adam, and the villainous sorcerer Skeletor on the planet Eternia. The franchise has previously spawned an animated TV series that ran from 1983 to 1985 and 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren.
Sony’s Matthew Milam will oversee the project for the studio and Mattel is a partner on the film. Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing alongside Franklin Entertainment’s DeVon Franklin.
