‘The Matrix 4’ Officially Moving Forward With Keanu Reeves & Carrie-Anne Moss

Variety reports Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their respective roles as Neo and Trinity in a fourth Matrix film.

In 1999, audiences were introduced to Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity in the groundbreaking Wachowskis film The Matrix.  Now, two decades after the original film was released, Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss will reprise their roles for a fourth Matrix film with Lana Wachowski on board as a co-writer and director.

The Matrix 4 will be produced and globally distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the following statement on revisiting the Matrix universe with Lana Wachowski:

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana. Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

In her own statement, Lana Wachowski commented on how the ideas she explored with her sister and co-director, Lilly, in the original Matrix film are even more relevant today:

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friend.”

The original Matrix and its two sequels collectively earned a total of $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss portrayed their respective characters in all three chapters of the Matrix film series, each one directed by  Lana and Lilly Wachowski.

The script for the fourth Matrix film was also co-written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchel while Lana Wachowski will also produce with Grant Hill. The outlet’s sources say the film is aiming to begin production in early 2020.
