Matt Reeves Talks Batman, Compares Character To Caesar

In case you have been living under a rock for – what feels like – forever; Matt Reeves is the director of the upcoming Batman standalone film. The project has been through more ups and downs than Ben Affleck’s early acting career; as of right now, the film has no release date, but that will change in the near future. Of course, Reeves will sound familiar and with good reason; the filmmaker is the man behind hits such as Cloverfield and Dawn of The Planet of The Apes; two critical – and commercial – successes. The director has a new Apes film coming out on July 14th, and while promoting the latest entry, Reeves discussed his take on Bruce Wayne/Batman and how similar he is to Caesar from the Apes franchise:

“It’s a strange thing to be involved in the two franchises which were the two that I was connected to most as a child. I just was obsessed with Batman when I was a kid. What I find so interesting about him as a character is that, as far a superhero goes, he’s not superhuman, he is a person. And he is a tortured soul who is grappling with his past and trying to find a way to be in a world that has a lot that’s wrong with it and trying to find a way to reconcile all of that … That is a really powerful character, in the same way that Caesar is such a powerful character.”

I genuinely wonder if Batman has ever been compared to an ape. That said, how do you guys feel about Reeves’ comments? Personally, I think the director is a perfect choice to helm this upcoming Batman movie, and with his arrival, hopefully Ben Affleck can relax a little bit and really take his time to perfect his – already awesome – portrayal of the Dark Knight.
