Matthew McConaughey Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 EgoA brand new piece of concept art featuring Matthew McConaughey as Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has made its way online.

When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2  was going through its pre-production and casting phase, Matthew McConaughey was being sought after by James Gunn and Marvel Studios to play Ego. As you remember, Ego was Peter Quill’s father, and was eventually played by Kurt Russell. The Guardians of the Galaxy art crew were so interested in Matthew McConaughey that they even went ahead and created concept art of him as Ego. Unfortunately, Matthew McConaughey passed on the role and instead went to star in The Dark Tower.

The concept art that made its way online was leaked and, as expected, was in exceptionally low quality. Now, we have an official look at the concept art of Matthew McConaughey as Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in all of its high-res glory by the artist who created it.

This is certainly a pleasant surprise to see years after Guardians of the Galaxy’s Vol. 2‘s official release. With this better look at Matthew McConaughey, we now have a better understanding of how his Ego would have looked. He’s certainly more sleeker and less aged that Kurt Russell, but he does have a certain suave charm to him. In the end, Kurt Russell received the role after Matthew McConaughey passed on it, but this concept art will always serve as a reminder of what could have been.
